Abstract

Electrospinning is a very simple process used to produce polymeric fibers with diameters in the range of a few nanometers  to a few micrometers, which cannot be accomplished using conventional spinning methods. Nanofibers have recently  found numerous attractive applications due primarily to their high surface area to volume ratio such as for drug delivery  or tissue engineering. In this work, nanofibers made from poly-vinyl-alcohol PVA combined with different drugs were prepared as a randomly oriented fibrous mat. The drugs are still active after electrospinning as proven by disc-diffusion method. Added salts form embedded crystals on the fibers as shown by SEM and AFM. This could be a useful route to produce fibers with rough surfaces.

Key Words: Electrospinning; poly-vinyl-alcohol; nanofibers.
